Design and Technology

St Ambrose RC Primary School – Design and Technology Curriculum Intent

“Wisdom has built herself a house.” (Proverbs 9:1)

At St Ambrose, we reflect the National Curriculum aims:

  • Design and Technology offer children the chance to use the gift of creative thinking and design, working towards a defined purpose and outcome
  • Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the process of designing and making.
  • Through evaluating past and present design and technology, children will develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
  • High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and wellbeing of our nation.

In this subject:

At St Ambrose, through the study of DT, children acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.  Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.

Design and Technology lessons will equip children with practical, hands-on skills that can serve them in various contexts as they grow older.  The skills and topics covered are varied and are refined as the children progress through school.  In lessons, children can show their skills in a practical and hands-on approach.  The skills that are taught are wide and varied, enabling children to find an aspect of design and technology that they feel most comfortable and suited to whilst also developing in the aspect they may be less confident in.

Children are encouraged to be iterative and evaluate their own and others’ work in Design Technology.  This promotes respect for the work they have created and their understanding that they may have a different solution or idea to somebody else.

We measure the impact of the DT curriculum over time by assessing how much knowledge, skills and vocabulary have been acquired and retained. To inform these judgements, teachers use regular retrieval practices, knowledge organisers, pre and post-assessment tasks, marking and pupil discussion opportunities.

In God's family, we grow and learn in love, hope and faith
